Deaf Awareness Week 2025

This week, May 5th to May 11th is Deaf Awareness Week.

Severe hearing loss can affect anyone of any age and be caused by a myriad of different factors; whethere the result of a genetic defect, an indistrial injury, an unfortunate accident or the symptom of a seemingly unrelated illness.

Whatever the cause, the challenges facing those with severe hearing loss are many and complex, and difficult to overcome in a world dominated by communication by sights and sounds.

We are putting a spotlight this week on the campaign of several national organisations - such as the Royal National Institute for the Deaf, the British Deaf Association, the Deafness Resource Centre and the National Deaf Childrens Society - to ask the general public, employers and decision-makers to go beyond recognising that deaf people live among us but to actively work to help them lead productive and meaningful lives free of unnecessary barriers.

Below is more about the campaign, in their own words, taken from the home page of the Deafness Resource Centre. Please click on their link, here , to find out more and see how you or your organisation can contribute to the campaign. Thank you.

"The theme for Deaf Awareness Week 2025 in the UK is “Beyond Silence”. This powerful theme highlights the importance of looking beyond the common misconceptions about deafness and recognising the rich experiences, identities, and contributions of Deaf individuals in society.

“Beyond Silence” encourages greater understanding of the diverse ways in which Deaf and hard-of-hearing people communicate, from British Sign Language (BSL) to lip-reading, written communication, and assistive technology. It also sheds light on the social, cultural, and professional barriers that many Deaf individuals face, advocating for improved accessibility, inclusivity, and equal opportunities.

This year’s campaign calls on individuals, organisations, and communities to go beyond simply acknowledging deafness and actively work towards meaningful change. By promoting BSL learning, improving workplace accessibility, ensuring equal access to education, and fostering more inclusive public spaces, we can build a society where Deaf people are truly heard, valued, and empowered.

Deaf Awareness Week 2025 is an opportunity for everyone to reflect, learn, and take action—because inclusion goes beyond just breaking the silence; it’s about amplifying voices, stories, and rights".
