Trainee Housing Court Desk Caseworker

Hours:              Full Time – 37 Hours per week 

Contract:         Fixed Term until March 2026 – further extension expected dependent upon funding

Salary range:  £27,321 - £29,621 Depending on experience

Reporting to:  Targeted Services Manager 

Work base:      Hybrid working with a mixture of office and home working. Also some mobile sessions including home visiting together with satellite                                      venues in and around South Warwickshire.

Citizens Advice South Warwickshire are an innovative community-based organisation, focused on meeting the needs of the people we serve across the south Warwickshire area. This includes the larger towns of Warwick, Kenilworth, Leamington Spa, and Stratford Upon Avon, as well as the villages surrounding these towns. We have been able to demonstrate our excellence across our advice channels through the yearly inspection process from National Citizens Advice and our Advice Quality Standards across all advice areas (AQS).

We make an amazing difference in the lives of the people of South Warwickshire. What we do is often life-changing and sometimes life-saving. In 2023-24 we delivered our advice and advocacy to over 8,500 clients and advised on over 39,000 issues. 

We are looking to recruit a Housing Court Desk Caseworker to train up to provide comprehensive casework, advice and assistance to clients facing eviction or repossession.

The role, once trained, will involve: attending court under the supervision of the lead caseworker; interviewing and supporting clients using sensitive listening and questioning skills in order to allow clients to explain their problem(s) and empower them to set their own priorities; identification of emergency advice issues and providing advice on how to move forward with those issues; acting on behalf of clients by calculating, negotiating, drafting, or writing letters and making telephone calls as needed; ensuring income is maximised within the client's household and a full welfare benefits check is carried out where appropriate; assessing the impact of budgeting and financial capability interventions in improving a client’s financial resilience; identifying and assessing client’s eligibility for grants and other one-off support, signposting/ referring as appropriate; developing and agreeing client action plans with those supported through the project with regular monitoring of progress; preparing cases to support in the advocating of cases in court; assisting clients with other related issues integral to their case and refer them to other advisers or specialist agencies as necessary; and
providing advice and assistance to other staff and volunteers across a range of housing issues, as required.
