World Homelessness Day - October 10th

October 10th was ‘World Homelessness Day’, a day given over to putting a spotlight on the new and emerging drivers, and devastatingly detrimental impacts, of homelessness.

Actual and threatened homelessness are on the rise almost everywhere in the UK as ongoing cost-of-living pressures continue to make it harder for tenants to pay rents and mortgage payers to keep up with their monthly payments.

In south Warwickshire alone, for example, the number of housing issues our advisers dealt with rose by 13% in 2024-25, while the number of ‘threatened homelessness’ issues dealt with also rose by 13%.

The most recent figures are even more stark; with client numbers with ‘actual homelessness’ issues rising by 73% between August and September 2025.

But, homelessness is not solely caused by financial problems. Overcrowding, family breakdown, domestic abuse, landlord behaviour, and the prejudicial treatment of those leaving ‘institutional care’ (such as prisons and hospitals) are just some of the other drivers involved.

What is simple to understand are the consequences of not just ‘street homelessness’ (aka ‘rough sleeping’) but also ‘hidden homelessness’; those living in temporary or emergency accommodation such as hostels and refuges.

These homeless suffer from psychological isolation, social exclusion, poorer health and wellbeing, and compounding disadvantages in their abilities to find and sustain employment.

No one chooses to be homeless and, if you haven’t experienced homelessness personally, no one can tell you they know what it's like not to have a safe and secure roof over your head.

What we can do is to work together to prevent homelessness in all its forms and mitigate the impacts of that homelessness for everyone affected.
