- National Volunteering Week 2025
02 June 2025
June 2nd to June 8th is National Volunteers Week.
We want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the work of our volunteer staff, and volunteers across the country. We thank every one of them for their support and commitment.
As our own Chief Officer, Julie Robinson, notes:
“Volunteers are both the lifeblood and backbone of our organisation. We ask a lot of them, rigorous induction training followed by a potentially stressful role providing information, advice and guidance to the most vulnerable members of our community, but we know we can rely on their commitment, their empathy and their professionalism”.
Of course, volunteers fill all manner of important roles within the local Citizens Advice service, not just as front line advice-givers. They may be Reception staff, administrative support staff, research and campaigns staff, even Trustees.
Every one of them plays a vital role in our work, but why do they do it and what do they get out of it?
Harjeevan, a volunteer from our Research & Campaigns team, shares his experiences below:
“I chose to volunteer with Citizens Advice South Warwickshire as it is somewhere you can make a real difference on a small and large scale. I have always been interested in politics, so the Research and Campaigns volunteer role was a great opportunity to help improve systems and processes that put extra pressure on those who need support.
I had previously volunteered at Coventry Citizens Advice a couple of years ago in the summer before starting University. That opportunity really opened my eyes to the support ordinary people need at both a local and national level.
During my time there, amendments to the Human Rights Act were being considered, and I was able to help draft our submission to a public consultation on those amendments. Just recently, the government published its controversial ‘Pathways to Work’ Green Paper. We will definitely be responding to these proposals also.
On a day-to-day basis, I try to keep up with any news that we feel will affect our community. The more we see, the more we can respond to; sharing the experiences of our clients and front line advisers with decision-makers and influencers. That makes the work feel more impactful.
However, much of Research and Campaigns is about hidden issues which affect those who cannot advocate on their own behalf and, more recently, I have been finding out how to identify these issues and help alleviate them.
Even as a student, and with other responsibilities, I still feel Citizens Advice provides ample opportunity to learn and support others around you.”
